Job Description

Due to continued growth, Hobart Service is looking for an experienced Technical Writer to join the Field Support and Training team in the Technical Service Publications Department.

Responsibilities (80% Core Essential Functions)
  • Develop and write technical service material such as Service Manuals and other service documentation needed to support the field service organization with the ability to:
  • Create service documentation using computer-based authoring system.
  • Develop schematic diagram for product.
  • Develop sequence of operation from wiring diagram.
  • Obtain any additional information needed from Subject Matter Experts to develop service documents.
  • Determine possible product malfunctions of a product and write procedures on how to diagnosis and repair the product.
  • Prepare line drawings from engineering models.
  • Disassemble, reassemble and research products as necessary to obtain information to develop written service instructions.
  • Consider and include safety procedures within service instructions.
  • Represent the department at meetings to provide technical expertise regarding manual creation for new product introduction or changes.
  • Assist in answering technical inquiries on current projects and follow up as necessary to resolve problems.
  • Assure documents meet departmental formatting and style standards.
  • Update existing service manuals and parts catalogs as submitted by Engineering, Product Support, Service Parts Distribution Center, and Technicians.
  • Work within product project timelines to be ready for production releases.
  • Assist in maintaining the consistency and improvement of standards and processes within the Technical Publications department and across the Field Support and Training team.
  • Prepare service readiness for new product introduction and significant existing product changes as they relate to company training needs.
  • Ensure all service documentation and parts catalogs demonstrate safe practices.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical or other Engineering discipline.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 3 – 5 years of Technical Writing creation and development.
  • Proficient in Microsoft such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficient in Adobe programs such as Illustrator, In Design, and Acrobat Professional.
  • Proficient in Solid Works, Pro E, Creo, Inventor or other engineering software:
    • exploded-view parts illustrations
    • schematic diagrams
    • wiring diagrams
    • Broad understanding of managing databases and server understanding.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work autonomously and to prioritize work with little supervision.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to view and analyze a situation from a very logical, systematic perspective and provide appropriate solutions.
  • Organizational skills in managing full project load that includes numerous projects with competing or staggered timelines in a sometimes demanding environment.
  • Ability to systematically organize and manage graphic and content files as well as manage project archives.
  • Ability to complete job requirements on schedule, as well as the ability to communicate job status to management, fellow associates, and the client.
  • Demonstrates competency in the application of engineering and Adobe products graphic design software.
  • Technical Aptitude – Ability to use essential technology and software for instructional and communication purposes.
  • Motivation - Ability to inspire oneself and others to reach a goal and/or perform to the best of their ability.
  • Flexibility – Ability to adapt quickly to changing demands, assignments and circumstances.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Multimedia production and other technology-based training programs.
  • Formal training or education in project management.
  • Primarily office setting.
  • Customer sites and conditions will vary based on industry and product.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, climb when at customer site.
  • May be exposed to noise, heat, cold, slippery, wet conditions.
  • May be required to sit/stand/walk.
  • May be required to lift 35-65 lbs.
  • May be required to climb ladder.
  • Up to 15% travel possible.
