Position Summary:

ITW Contamination Control Electronics, a business unit of ITW, is an industry-leading manufacturer of specialty products used in production and MRO applications in wide range of industries throughout the world. The ITW Chemtronics, Techspray and Plato brands are the leading providers in many industries including telecommunications, aerospace, defense, electronic equipment manufacturing, medical equipment manufacturing, industrial equipment, security and institutional.

We are currently seeking a full-time candidate for the position of. Chemist. The position is located in Kennesaw, GA and will report directly to the Director of R&D.  The Chemist will be responsible for working on new product development, optimization, and production support.  In a short period, we expect this position to provide technical oversight, coordination of cross-functional teams and overall leadership.

The Chemist will develop into the primary contact for customers, coordinate with site project teams (Operations, Purchasing, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, EHS, Regulatory, etc.) and be responsible for monitoring project plan timelines, budgets, and follow-up of actions associated with the projects.  The preferred candidate will have a strong background and experience in organic chemistry and will have the ability to manage multiple projects efficiently, independently, and coordinate cross-functional project teams.

Key Duties:

●  Formulate and develop new products as requested by Management and Marketing. This includes creating and developing new products in the following areas: all aerosols and liquids, coatings, presaturated wipes, desoldering braid, and all CircuitWorks.

●  Conceptualize, formulate, develop and introduce new products based on input from sales, marketing, and management. This includes developing applications, implementing process and quality standards for new and existing products, competitive testing and analysis, producing competitive selling information for sales force, and creating sales support materials.

●  Conduct performance evaluations and re-formulation of existing products, new products and competitive products and provide technical reports of results as dictated by changing regulatory, financial and material requirements. This includes testing and verifying new and modified products with respect to performance, safety, stability, and production feasibility.

●  Provide guidance on current and upcoming environmental regulations that impact the business; offer possible solutions to changes and ongoing environmental obstacles as required. Advise Management of any product compliance issues on a worldwide basis. Conduct regular field tech support to identify changes in regulations and chemical compliance at the end-user and distributor level.

●  Review and initiate specifications of both new and modified products in conjunction with product development manager and manage the files and BOM’s for all existing raw material, batching and aerosol specifications according to Quality requirements.

●  Work with Operations on process modifications and improvements.

●  Provides technical support by troubleshooting customer’s issues.

●  Provide customer-specific testing as requested.

●  Conduct training of distributors and sales personnel as needed.

●  Interact with distributors / customers in a positive and professional manner.

●  Maintain a clean, safe and organized laboratory.

●  Interpret technical papers directly related to our product offering.

●  Effectively interface with all levels of the plant workforce to effectively communicate and align on product and operational risks.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no direct reports. However, under the direction of the Director, the Chemist will develop into the departmental operations leader. 

Work Environment

Work is carried out in a research and development laboratory. While performing the duties of this job, the employee handles hazardous chemicals in the laboratory. The employee will be required to wear all appropriate safety equipment including but not limited to eye protection, gloves, and lab coat. Strict adherence to corporate and/or plant policies, rules and regulations in these areas is required.  

Physical Demands

This role may require long periods of walking and standing.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., 40 hours per week.


Travel up to 10%.

Job Requirements

●  Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry/Organic Chemistry; Master’s is highly preferred.

●  At least five (5) years of experience in R&D, Quality, Product Development or testing laboratory.

●  Knowledge of Federal, State, Local and FDA regulations, R&D formulation, Aerosols, quality control requirements, and comparative product testing. 

●  Strong written/verbal communication skills; demonstrates good listening and coaching skills; able to communicate and work effectively with all levels in the organization.

●  Experience and working knowledge of operating and maintaining the following laboratory equipment: analytical balances, pH meters, viscometers, gas chromatograph, FTIR spectrophotometer, Karl Fisher Titrator. Must be familiar with the analytical methods and techniques associated with the equipment.

●  Independent and organized work style: Effectively manages time and prioritizes work load, assumes and manages multiple tasks and projects without close supervision.

●  Highly adaptable and capable of leading and facilitating change.

●  Ability to make independent decisions and regularly suggest ways to improve services and processes.

●  Must possess strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint

●  Ability to travel up to 10%.
