Illinois Tool Works Inc. is seeking a well-organized, reliable and highly motivated Paralegal with knowledge of litigation and compliance.  The Senior Litigation & Compliance Paralegal is responsible for providing paralegal support and assistance to attorneys in the coordination, management, and supervision of all aspects of litigation, as well as assisting occasionally with compliance-related issues and projects.  Duties to include but not limited to the following:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist attorneys with responding to discovery (interrogatories, requests for admissions, and request for production of documents).
  • Review draft answers to complaints and draft responsive pleadings to discovery.
  • Draft litigation holds with attorney assistance.
  • Manage portfolio of Legal Dept. litigation holds (e.g. maintain hold list, docket dates, send reminders, release holds).
  • Respond to subpoenas and other third party requests for information with minimal attorney supervision.
  • Assist with litigation and compliance-related presentation materials and projects.
  • Work with ITW Business Units, attorneys and paralegal staff (litigation, compliance and corporate) in responding to legal information requests.
  • Work with outside law firm paralegals and attorneys in responding to legal information requests and otherwise as needed.
  • Manage intake process of new lawsuits and other matters, including working with matter management system and coordinating with internal stakeholders.
  • Possess applicable knowledge of judicial processes and filing requirements, and experience working with court rules and procedures, litigation terminology and documentation, docketing procedures, and bates numbering.
  • Advise attorneys of status dates and changes.
  • Coordinate and make recommendations for case staffing across the U.S.
  • Prepare reports and spreadsheets to assist attorneys as needed.
  • Coordinate document retrieval of offsite files.
  • Maintain files.


  • Associate degree or Paralegal certificate from an ABA accredited institution required. Bachelor degree preferred.
  • 10 + years of progressive work experience in the litigation practice area preferably in a law firm environment.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and analytical ability; possess an inquisitive nature.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, meet tight deadlines, be team player and pay attention to detail.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
