Senior Electrical Technician – R&D

Position Summary
 
We have an opening within the product R&D organization for a Senior Electrical Technician.  In this position you will be responsible for supporting the Electrical Engineering team and their concurrent projects and tasks as well as maintaining the Electrical Engineering lab and its equipment.  You will work in a highly collaborative and dynamic environment with frequent interaction with multi-disciplined engineers from many different departments.
 
 
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Build prototypes of standard products, including PCB breadboards, cable assemblies, and mounting systems/enclosures.
  • Test, modify and rework vendor-fabricated and prototype PCBs during new product development.
  • Re-work or repair PCBs and cables for Manufacturing and Service when needed in urgent situations.
  • Perform delicate surface-mount PCB soldering and reworks using microscope.
  • Create prototype cables and cable assemblies either to engineering drawings or by instructions from engineers.
  • Follow schematics and drawings when carrying out the work as assigned.
  • Debug and correct malfunctions on electrical components included in Instron machines such as power supplies, power amplifiers, motors, transformers, etc.
  • Work with electrical engineers to set up and run various lab tests.
  • Support engineers at off-site EMC testing lab by delivering and setting up equipment-under-test.
  • Set up and maintain stock as required for lab work.
  • Requisition and expedite material and parts as directed, both in-house and out-of-house.
  • Maintain test instruments and tools in the lab.
  • Organize the lab space as required to support multiple projects.
  • Recommend lab equipment and tool upgrades.
  • Maintain ISO certification database for lab instruments and organize scheduled calibrations with outside services.
  • Work on tasks that are often not standardized and prescribed.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
  • The ability to read, comprehend and transmit instructions in order to plan and perform job duties.This is normally acquired through completion of a technical high school or Associate’s Degree education.
  • Proficiency using lab equipment such as oscilloscope, multi-meter.
  • Ability to perform fine-pitch surface mount PCB reworks using a microscope. This is normally acquired through completion of an IPC certification course. Ability to rework component packages down to 0201.
  • Ability to read and understand design standards and documentation.
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams and system-level schematics.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and pay attention to details and to lift and carry objects up to 40lbs.
  • Ability to interface and communicate with co-workers to properly transfer ideas and information.
  • Familiarity or learn Engineering Electronic CAD and product / parts database management systems.
  • Ability to organize and maintain an efficient, state-of-the-art electrical development lab.
  • Familiarity with computers and the internet in order to be able to order parts and supplies online, and keep track of ISO equipment calibrations in a database.
  • Work with minimal supervision.
  • Proven strong attention to detail, interpersonal, communication and organizational skills, and the ability to create, collaborate and work within team environments.
