Job Description

 

SUMMARY:

Responsible for the design, development, documentation, and scale-up of new products to satisfy business goals and the coordination of lab functions, lab duties, technical support, and overall daily project management with appropriate lab personnel and other departments.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

●  Develop new polyurethane, epoxy, and/or methacrylate adhesive compositions for the alternative energy, transportation, wear & abrasion, and general industrial markets.

●  Incorporate polymers, catalysts, modifiers, and monomers in adhesives to fulfill unmet customer/application needs while complying with adopted ISO requirements. Follow established ISO procedures and documentation.

●  Design highly-focused and data-driven New Product Development projects that yield high-value, differentiated products. This consists of clearly identifying project goals within a Stage-Gate process, establishing a test strategy, conducting laboratory evaluations, and issuing final comprehensive reports.

●  Participate in the scale up of formulations from lab scale to mid- and full-size commercial batches. Coordinate and work with all internal departments on the technology transfer for scale-up and commercialization, and determine the appropriate design and product specifications to maximize ease of manufacturing and customer application.

●  Provide short- and long-term support for current products to maintain ITW’s reputation for quality and performance.

●  Keep up with environmental and global standards changes for chemicals and maintain a knowledge bank of raw materials and manufacturers for use to develop and maintain present and future needs. Stay abreast of and respond to the changing landscapes in market needs, raw materials, and technological advances in the field.

●  Manage multiple projects/tasks independently and as part of a team and fully utilize analytical laboratory equipment.

●  Perform and delegate daily functions as required to provide the highest level of technical assistance and customer satisfaction. When necessary, manage the daily activities of a research lab technician(s).

●  Manage project work load and schedule to effectively minimize distraction and shorten the commercialization process.

●  Assist in training /direction of new personnel and distributor reps.

●  Work in a globally diverse corporate environment and be sensitive to employees and customer environments as part of representing ITW in customer calls and virtual or direct joint research projects.

●  Promote, support, and adhere to all safety, environmental, and quality policies and procedures.

●  Utilize the ITW Toolbox of best practices.

Job Requirements

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

●  MS degree or higher in Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, or Polymer Engineering or equivalent.

●  7-10 years of experience as a Chemist in Product Development and Manufacturing Support with a strong emphasis epoxy and urethane adhesive and/or coatings chemistries. Experience in acrylics preferred.

●  Must be a practical, hands-on scientist with excellent lab technique and problem-solving ability.

●  Strong computer, organizational, and destructive and mechanical testing skills are required. Fluency with Word, Excel, Access, and JD Edwards is essential. Experience with polymer testing equipment (DSC, TGA, Rheometer, Instron) highly preferred.

●  Must have strong communication, organizational, analytical, and investigative skills.

●  Ability to lift up to 40 pounds for raw material, customer substrate, and equipment handling, and an ability to work in tight places on occasion.

●  Must be able to travel occasionally.
