Job Description


  • This position will be assigned to the North America Region, and home base location may be flexible within this region.

Main responsibilities:

  • Is accountable for proliferating the use and understanding of 80/20 FTB with specific emphasis on operational 80/20.
  • Operational 80/20, is defined as strategic PLS, in-lining and MRD. More specifically, the Director will:
    • In partnership with Group Presidents and VP/GMs, assess each 80’ plant relative to specific In-lining/MRD practice
    • Develop with the VP/GM and Divisional Operations a plan and timeline for plant improvement
    • Work with the Divisions to identify FTB 80/20 operational opportunities and be a resource to assist project teams by providing guidance based on their expertise.
  • While the focus will be on operational 80/20 (strategic PLS, in-lining and MRD) the director should have sufficient knowledge of all 9 steps of 80/20 FTB to be able to assess and teach 80/20 as a holistic business re-design process.
  • 80/20 financial acumen – Tracking 80/20 savings and making sure that the plants achieve their targets.  This includes working with the VP/GMs in setting targets each year and working with the divisions to exceed goals.
  • 80/20 capability building for operations within the Divisions. The director should be the 80/20 training lead for the region.  This includes working with the VP/GMs on:
    • Support the development of senior leaders’, including VP/GM, 80/20 expertise through proven results in key Model Factory operational metrics
    • Sharing accountability for measuring and upgrading Division Ops Directors and plant manager 80/20 skills
    • Organizing workshops around impactful projects.  These projects should lead to improved results that can be tracked to the division’s metrics. 
  • As required, play an active part in the FTB Steering Committee. The committee meets to review FTB findings, share best practices, and make improvements in the process. This will include: active participation in meetings, preparing segment VP/GMs, providing feedback/coaching to VP/GMs as well as follow up on committee feedback and recommendations to VP/GMs.

  • Credible, trusted leadership – Most of the work is done through influence rather than authority and must be willing to be hands on rather than a high level consultant.

  • Proven ability to work with all levels of the organization from the EVP to the shop floor employee to achieve objectives. Instill ownership and accountability in teams.

  • Effectively educate, coach and guide global 80/20 application.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills. Able to use real examples when explaining how 80/20 works.

  • Sound financial background – 80/20 is a lot about the numbers.  This person needs to have a strong working understanding of ITW’s financial metrics.

  • Organizational Skills - able to be very organized and flexible to handle the changing priorities of the position. 

  • Must demonstrate and role model ITW’s values

  • Willing to Travel. Domestic travel is an important part of this role.  

Job Requirements


Demonstrated success with track record of results in creating best in class ITW divisional operations by employing proprietary ITW techniques. Has demonstrated the ability to improve operations in different businesses environments. Must have sufficient knowledge of all 9 steps of the FTB process Experience would typically be gained as Director of Operations, plant manager or similar. Strong Project Management, change management, and communication skills.
