Job Description

Hobart Brothers LLC, an Illinois Tool Works Company within the Welding Group, is a recognized leader in the manufacturing and distribution of welding consumables worldwide. 

Basic Description:

The Production Supervisor’s role is to promote an engaged and safe work environment, set and measure productivity standards, understand and reduce costs, produce on-time delivery, develop employees/teams, reward for performance and be a positive culture steward.  This position will be responsible for a 3-shift operation of the KC manufacturing facility and report to the Operations Manager.

Essential Functions:

  • Create/maintain superior team safety awareness through OPX and develop corrective actions for safety concerns.

  • Coach and develop work teams to have positive and proactive attitudes, personal accountability, and superior manufacturing quality as well as encouraging ownership of operations, products, and processes.

  • Work closely with internal departments to maintain and improve the manufacturing environment to harmoniously respond to changing customer needs and demands.

  • Ensures full optimization of the KC plant.  Work with Operations Leadership to transfer product through facilities to increase productivity and minimize changeovers.

  • Through employee involvement, the production supervisor will lead cost, quality, delivery, and productivity initiatives as well as continue to encourage empowerment and to drive ITW principles as well as 80/20 efforts.

  • Involvement with capital expenditures, budget, and financial support.

  • Standardize methods, work instructions, and best practices through cross functional teams including production coordinators from other facilities.

  • Maintain hiring and staffing levels across all shifts to meet business needs, working with Human Resources, outside agencies, and consistently following internal policies.

  • Performance management, including the preparation and administration of performance reviews and ongoing individual coaching.

  • Disciplinary management, including investigating and administering corrective action consistent with internal policies supported by Human Resources and operations management.

  • Lead, develop, train, and mentor Group Leaders and production team members in all areas including safety, quality, equipment operation and encourage the achievement of effective goals.

  • Responsible for shift coordination and scheduling priorities to ensure safe and efficient operations based on demand.

  • Build relationships, be visible, communicate, encourage creativity and innovation.

  • Effective communication across all shifts and levels of the organization.

  • Holds self and teammates accountable for living the ITW Culture and values.

Job Requirements

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree, preferably in Engineering or Business.

  • 1 to 3 years of relevant leadership experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Experience managing a multi-shift operation preferred.

  • Flexible work schedule capable of meeting the needs of a 3-shift, 24/5 operation.

  • Proven ability to apply ITW principles in a manufacturing environment, safety compliance, Lean Manufacturing, and Quality Standards.

  • Utilize the ITW Toolbox (80/20, PLS, MRD, USa) to foster continuous improvement of people, processes, and products.

  • Contributes to the strategic direction of the business.

  • Proven problem-solving skills to include analytical and critical thinking skills.

  • Be customer-focused with management, support staff, customers, and suppliers;  understand how the business functions link together to support the customer (i.e. engineering, materials, and sales).

  • Exhibit encouragement of diverse ideas, focus on coaching/developing strengths of team members and facilitate effective communication between shifts.

  • Skilled at performance management; providing formal and informal feedback to employees.

  • Possess the track record of a proven leader and team player, demonstrates positive attitude, takes personal accountability, coaches, listens, approachable, and resolves issues/conflicts in timely manner.

  • Must be self-driven and be able to motivate others, able to identify needs and show the ability to make things happen with little supervision.

  • Strong computer (Microsoft Office), oral and written communication skills, prior experience with Route Card system is a plus.
