Job Description

Position Summary:

 As a key member of the engineering leadership team, the Product Engineering Manager reports directly to the Director of Engineering and is responsible managing a cross-functional Mechanical Engineering team tasked with designing, maintaining, improving, and releasing world class machinery to meet our core market’s needs.  The Product Engineering Manager will collaborate across the organization to help define and implement our machine standards and industry-leading engineering practices.  The selected candidate with work with the remainder of the engineering leadership team to build a cross functional organization that maximizes productivity through cross-training, continuous improvement, and ongoing talent-development.

 This position will be based at our headquarters in Greenville, South Carolina.

Primary Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning

  • Partner with the leadership team to develop and execute Annual and Long Range Plans based on in-depth understanding of market segmentation, technology trends, customer needs & pain points, and competitive position. 
  • Partner with Applications, Project Management, Electrical/Controls, and Engineering Systems Managers to help develop and implement our standardization strategy and work to develop evaluation process to ensure standards compliance while providing input to ensure our standards are in line with our key ’80’ opportunities.
  • Drive the development of meaningful metrics that measure the product line engineering; track KPI progress and advise/update all key stakeholders on a regular basis.

 Product Engineering Planning / Management

  • Drive best-in-class product mechanical engineering in-line with key market requirements, while developing procedures and practices to streamline the streamline the engineering process, improve lead times, improve quality, and reduced zero-charge (warranty) service.
  • Analyze and build a high performing product engineering team with resources focused on meeting or exceeding business targets, including allocating resources effectively to meet customer and business demands.
  • Be key leader in the business standardization effort, working with commercial, application and execution team to define market standards, implement internal, and support external strategy
  • Work with the Service team to develop ongoing process to review and asses machine service frequency / premature part failure and implement action plans to address related issues.
  • Work with the Operations and Quality team(s) to implement and manage a continuous improvement system to drive engineering effectiveness and continual reduction of engineering work order changes.
  • Develop a cross functional engineering team with the ability to meet the business growth targets and support our target-markets.
  • Work with Application & Execution teams to support quote development through providing and maintaining standard pricing models for machine product lines.
  • Work with other functions to standardize engineering practices to drive DFMA throughout all engineering facets of the business. 
  • Work with Innovation team to implement proper hand-off processes from R&D to Commercialization.
  • Work with the Operations team to develop robust procedures for maintaining backlog, streamlining machine releases, and supporting company strategic sourcing initiatives. 

 Continuous Improvement / ITW Toolbox Implementation

  • Lead and Champion 80/20, USa, MRD, In-Lining and continuous improvement initiatives that achieve results aligned with company goals.
  • Define key performance metrics and monitor performance to exceed KPI targets. Actively adjust and implement changes necessary to drive best-in-industry performance to produce optimum engineering and manufacturing results and foster continual P&L improvement.
  • Drive consistent work place policies and procedures that are aligned with ITW approaches and develop key metrics to measure progress of initiatives to consistently reduce cost thru productivity gains.

 Team Leadership and Development

  • Lead and develop talent to maximize individual, team and organizational effectiveness.  Foster a culture of engagement and accountability, cascading vision, and goal alignment.
  • Use appropriate interpersonal styles and techniques to gain acceptance of ideas and plans. Coach through feedback, development planning, and performance management.
  • Champion the effective use of change management principles, strategies, and techniques to plan, implement, and evaluate change.
  • Build a strong pipeline of talent to ensure a diverse and high-performing organization.
  • Ensure that the company has the mechanical engineering skills to meet and exceed all industry and customer requirements for now and in the future.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent engineering experience.
  • 10+ years of related progressive experience in engineering, with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce results within a team environment and to gain alignment thru collaboration and develop productive working relationships at all levels of the organization   
  • Demonstrated ability to support development and management of machine standards to meet company objectives for reduced lead-time and overall machine standardization.
  • Demonstrated ability to distil complex technical and procedural problems into a problem statement, gather data to draw conclusions, and develop appropriate plans to address.
  • Strong change management, analytical, problem solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Experience building people and organization plans to ensure organizational readiness and capability to meet changing business conditions.
  • Excellent understanding of business dynamics and organizational design.
  • Excellent business analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent time-management, prioritization, and project management skills.
  • Confident with financial data analysis and budget planning.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills with experience in communicating and working with remote teams.
  • Willing to travel when necessary.
  • Demonstrated cross-cultural awareness.

Preferred Qualifications

  •  MBA and/or Advanced degree in Engineering.
  • Packaging machine engineering experience.
  • Experience in the food, beverage, and/or personal & home care markets.
  • Financial training with knowledge of GAP accounting practices and revenue recognition practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to map and manage demand/capacity projections.
