Summer Mechanical Engineering Intern – Lancaster, PA

Illinois Tool Works (ITW) is a Fortune 200 company that produces an array of diversified products in global markets.  Some of its products include welding equipment, automotive components, construction materials, commercial food equipment and food waste equipment.  The Somat/Stero Company, one of many companies and divisions in the Food Equipment Group of ITW, located in Lancaster, PA, manufactures waste reduction products that are used in schools, hospitals, casinos, colleges, cafeterias, cruise ships, government facilities and other high-volume operations that partner with Somat for cost-cutting, environment sustaining solutions.  The Stero Company manufactures commercial dishwashers that are used to clean dishware in schools, hospitals, casinos, colleges, prisons and other high-volume cafeteria operations.


The Somat/Stero Plant location in Lancaster, PA is looking for a self-directed, results-oriented engineering student to work on a mechanical engineering manual conversion project.  This summer assignment will involve reading mechanical drawings and revising the “old school” manuals to convert them into a digitized version.  The student must be able to read drawings, have an eye for changes and be able to convert the manual to a digital format.  The student must have good written skills, will work in an Adobe environment and be capable of doing 2D and 3D drawings.  We’re looking for a student who is curious and has a willingness to learn about our dishwasher and waste reduction equipment.

What you will do:

  • 2D and 3D drawings
  • Read mechanical drawings and make appropriate updates
  • Convert manual drawings into digitized drawings
  • Convert manuals to digitized versions
  • Learn about the manufacture and design of dishwasher and waste reduction products
  • Learn basic manufacturing engineering processes

Hours of Work and Rate of Pay:

  • The summer intern position will begin in May and will end in August (mutually agreeable start/end date)
  • The hours of work are 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday - Friday and the rate of pay is $16.50/hour


Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Mechanical Engineering Student (rising sophomore, junior or senior) at an accredited Engineering University or enrolled in a technical program
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
  • Basic 2D or 3D modeling and drafting skills or knowledge
  • Strong organizational, attention to detail and technical knowledge or interest
  • Familiarity with Adobe preferred
