Manufacturing/Mechanical Engineer – Continuous Improvement Team

Position Summary
We are looking to strengthen the Manufacturing Engineering group within Continuous Improvement Team and have an opening for a Manufacturing Engineer. You will work primarily with our High Force Applications production line, which includes electromechanical, static-hydraulic, pendulum impact, and micro-torsion testing systems. In this position you will be responsible for several concurrent projects or tasks including design to resolve critical technical issues, mainly by troubleshoot problems with vendors. Inputs may come from Continuous Improvement, Manufacturing, and R&D teams. You will work in a highly collaborative and dynamic environment where frequent interaction with vendors and suppliers, other multi-disciplined engineers, as well as team members in other Instron departments.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, and/or Industrial Engineering with a minimum of 2+ years of hands-on work experience performing engineering support in a machining or mechanical assembly environment.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, Solid Edge, and FEA design software, GD&T, BOMs, mechanical drawings, ECOs, product lifecycle management, and documentation control.
  • Proficient with software such as Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI, Access, Minitab, and Agile PLM.
  • Work with Quality and Design teams to document and resolve non-conformance issues as they arise using both a corrective and preventative approach.
  • Apply ITW toolbox methods to drive manufacturing process improvements at both a participant and team leader level.
  • Responsible for the optimization of production lines and manufacturing processes.
  • Provide Engineering solutions to manufacturing and assembly problems.
  • Design and document gage, tooling, and fixture designs for use in inspection, assembly, and testing of machine components.
  • Create material specifications for machined parts with a focus on optimization of manufacturing processes and cost reduction.
  • Prepare set-up sheets, quality control plans, manufacturing work instructions, and product test procedures to ensure a high standard of quality and to improve productivity.
  • Experience with parts produced by a variety of manufacturing processes, including all types of machining, sheet metal, extrusions, castings, and moldings.
  • Experience with production and troubleshooting of hydraulic equipment is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of metrology including the use of inspection equipment such as calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, FARO arms, and CMMs.
  • Understanding and experience with principles in systems testing and design verification including: setting up and conducting tests, data acquisition, statistical analysis, summarizing data and writing reports.
  • Review Engineering Services Requests, collect problem history from quality/manufacturing/service, troubleshoot and design solutions.
  • Manage project schedule, plan and conduct V&V testing, create and update different documents related for Products’ release (Sales Specification, Work instructions, Installation drawings, Service Diagnose Tip, etc).
  • Working with internal customers from other teams (R&D/Service) and vendors.
  • Proven strong attention to detail, interpersonal, communication and organizational skills, and the ability to create, collaborate and work within team environments.
  • Must have a strong sense of urgency and be a team player that is focused on encouraging employee involvement in improving activities and promoting change.
  • Willing to travel domestically several times per year (estimate travel <5%).
