SUMMARY:
Responsible for the design, development, documentation, and scale-up of new products to satisfy business goals; coordination of lab functions, lab duties, technical support, and overall daily project management with appropriate lab personnel and other departments.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Develop, synthesize, support, and record methacrylate, epoxy, and/or polyurethane adhesive compositions for the Industrial, Wind, Wear & Abrasion, and Transportation growth initiatives. Provide near- and long-term support for current and new product development needs.
● Independently or under the supervision of a Senior Chemist, design highly-focused and data-driven new product development projects that yield high-valued, differentiated products. This consists of clearly identifying project goals within a Stage-Gate process, establishing a test strategy, conducting laboratory evaluations, and issuing final comprehensive reports.
● Coordinate and work with all internal departments on the development, scale-up, technology transfer to manufacturing, and commercialization of new products. Determine the appropriate product design, product specifications, and production support needs to maximize ease of manufacturing and design of technical literature.
● Manage multiple projects/tasks independently and in a team. Fully utilize analytical laboratory equipment.
● Manage project work load and schedule to effectively minimize distraction and shorten the commercialization process.
● Follow established ISO procedures and documentation.
● Assist in training /direction of new personnel and distributor reps.
● Perform and delegate daily functions as required to provide the highest level of technical assistance and customer satisfaction.
● Maintain an electronic database to record technical data.
● Promote, support, and adhere to all safety, environmental, and quality-related policies and procedures.
● Utilize the ITW Toolbox of best practices.
EDUCATION: BS in Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Polymer Science, Polymer Engineering, or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE: Recent college graduate with hands-on lab experience. Co-op and/or 1-5 years industrial experience preferred.
SKILLS: Must be a practical, hands-on scientist with good lab technique and problem-solving ability. Strong computer, organizational, and destructive and mechanical testing skills. Fluent with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Microsoft Access and JD Edwards a plus.
COMPETENCIES: Good computer and data organizing skills. Strong communication, organizational, analytical, and investigative skills.
TRAVEL: Ability to travel occasionally to: 1) support lab work at a customer, 2) troubleshoot, 3) attend trade shows, 4) perform customer audits and/or customer presentations, 5) train internal commercial team, distributors, and/or customers in the use of new products, and 6) provide emergency customer support.
PHYSICAL: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds for raw material, equipment, and/or customers’ substrate handling. Ability to work in tight places on occasion.
