Division Description:


ITW Air Flow Management produces interior components. Our Intent is to defend North America market leader position in Pressure Relief Valves for noise attenuation while driving to become a leader in Air Registers; delivering differentiated value to NA Automotive OEM’s addressing industry trends of autonomous driving, display integration, and customized environments.

Position Summary:


The Innovation Engineer will report to the Engineering Manager and will be responsible be located in Troy, MI.  The Innovation Engineer role has a high degree of focus on resolving customer pain points with innovative solutions leading to intellectual property developments on behalf of ITW AirFlow Management (AFM). Lead the development of product concepts including, but not limited to, preparation of conceptual models via customer 3D CAD software, bench testing, facilitate and understand FEA simulation results, generate bill of material information, create 2D prints and facilitate design for manufacturing efforts for the manufacturing facility. Utilizing an innovative mindset, actively participate in the generation and implementation of VA/VE ideas/projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead innovation forums with global colleagues to ensure we are utilizing expertise to deliver on CBI/Innovation/value-based selling as identified in AFM (Air Flow Management) North Americas (NA) strategy.

  • Testing procedures and output reports which are in full compliance with IATF 16949 standards

  • Function as conduit to external CAD resources as needed.

  • Lead CAD efforts internal to ITW as needed to deliver to customer expectations (modeling, prints, etc.)

  • Prepare DFMEA documents as part of the product development/launch sequence

  • Actively participate in the intellectual property discussion on an as needed basis.

  • Deliver innovative market attractive concepts aligned with AFM North America mission statement leading to development of intellectual property on behalf of ITW AFM NA.

  • Actively drive design for manufacturing working sessions, to ensure that designs for tomorrow can be manufactured at the highest level of efficiency.

  • Lead bench testing efforts internal to ITW, interpret results, write reports and present to internal and external audiences as needed.



Job Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering,  Mechanical Engineering Technology or Industrial Design, Masters Degree preferred

  • Proficiency with solid modeling techniques,  Pro/E or Solidworks preferred

  • Knowledge of plastic and metal part design, materials, injection molding, metal stamping & assembly techniques (manual or automatic)

  • Effective oral and written communication

  • Adaptable, flexible, innovative, problem solving skills, sense of urgency, listening skills

  • Organizational, task planning, interpersonal and multitasking skills

  • Strong PC skills with proficiency in MS Office programs

  • Knowledge or exposure to CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and MS Project beneficial

  • 5+ years Automotive Product Development Experience

  • High degree of experience and focus on Plastic Injection Molding Airflow components, fluid dynamics
