Role Summary: 

As a member of the Innovation Team, the Innovation Engineer position requires a combination of interpersonal, strategic and technical skill sets.  This role engages in a wide range of activities, from customer engagement to identify and understand the value of new problems, to ideation, proof of concept and initial development of new solutions for those problems and evaluate strategic fit with our divisional strategy.

We use a customer-back innovation model to identify unmet customer needs, understand the value and differentiation available in solving those issues, create the best possible solutions and support the development of resulting products that drive the profitable growth of the business.

Candidates must have strong interpersonal skills, CAD proficiency, MS Office suite familiarity and a creative mindset.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Act as trusted advisor within ITW and with our customers (Auto OEMs and Tiers). 

  • Interact with customer to identify unmet and more importantly unarticulated needs/pain points.

  • Understand, articulate, and keep at the forefront, the customer value on each project. 

  • Using customer relationships as developed over time, apply creative and alternative approaches to solving customer needs.

  • Project Management of Customer Back Innovation projects in the Discover and Create phases, collaborating with sales & engineering, manufacturing, tooling and sourcing teams throughout the process.

  • Complete product design, complete product prototypes, product testing and evaluation to customer expectations demonstrating alignment with needs and expectations.

  • Benchmark competitive products and be able to find ways to differentiate our products from the competition.

  • Stay abreast of trade journals, technical releases, and internet research as it relates to this position as well as to specific projects.

  • Demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit. Be willing to not just THINK, but WORK “outside the box”

Job Requirements

Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering with mechanical design exposure.

  • 5+ years of Product/Project Engineering background. 

  • Injection molding experience and assembly design a plus.

  • Automotive industry knowledge and experience a plus.

  • Proven record of innovation new product development successes. 

  • Proven record of establishing, working relationships with customers – considered a trusted advisor. 

  • Strong analytical skills coupled with the ability to exercise sound judgment.

  • Demonstrated willingness to think/go/develop where others may not.

  • Willing to challenge status quo in a positive and collaborative way.

  • Ability to work within time frames or key milestones.

  • Comfortable with internal and external customer interaction.

  • Ability to communicate developed solutions through graphics, language, and demonstration tools

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Excellent computer skills (MS Office, CAD – ProE, Catia, UG, or similar)

  • Work efficiently without significant supervision.

  • Proven Project management skills.

  • Knowledge of marketing/commercialization within the global automotive industry.

  • Willing to travel; primarily domestic and occasionally world-wide. 10%-15%
