Financial Controller, Dynamic Systems



Reports to:

Divisional Finance Controller


Job purpose

This is a broad scope Finance Controller position with responsibility for Instron UK’s Manufacturing, Engineering, Service and Sales functions. The holder’s main responsibilities will include preparation of monthly management accounts, group financial reporting, forecasting / planning, tax and statutory reporting. The position is part of the Dynamic Systems management team and is expected to provide financial input and support for business unit decision making.

This position currently has 5 direct reports and a team of 12.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

The role is responsible for delivery of the following tasks, either directly or through the team:

1.  Group financial reporting.

2.  Annual operating plan and Long Range plan

3.  Quarterly forecasting.

4.  Monthly outlook, especially maintenance of the revenue and margin forecast

5.  Variance analysis and commentary to group.

6.  Month end reporting including management reports, accruals, prepayments & provisions.

7.  Accounts Payable

8.  Responsibility for tax and statutory reporting.

9.  Manage hedging programme.

10.  Manage internal and external audits.

11.  Shipping and Logistics

12.  Accounts Receivable

13.  Asset management

14.  Internal controls

15.  Coordination of the insurance and risk management programmes

16.  Maintains relationships with external financial institutions and professional advisors

17.  Management of the finance function in 3 European sales units (France, Spain, Turkey)

18.  R&D project approval

19.  Ad hoc projects

Key Competencies (includes skills)

  • Team management and communication skills are required to run this department.
  • Ability to work in a matrix environment serving various interested parties is required as well as commercial acumen and a focus on results.
  • Excellent accounting skills (management & statutory) including knowledge of US GAAP are required to manage the complex reporting requirements. Knowledge of processes & internal controls required to drive improvement and efficiency while adhering to internal policies and external statutory requirements.
  • A strong analytical ability to interpret figures and variance analysis and to provide suggestions for improvement and mitigation. Skills in data analysis (e.g. Power BI) would be useful.

Key KPIs/other performance measurements 

Balance sheet KPIs for AR are under direct control of this position as is forecasting accuracy. There is a great deal of influence over slow and obsolete inventory.

Working conditions

The role is based in the High Wycombe office but some European travel is required.

Job Requirements


  • A recognised accounting qualification (CIMA/ACA/ACCA) is a requirement for the role. In addition, the incumbent must have experience of working in a manufacturing environment.
  • The incumbent must demonstrate evidence of commercial, analytical and interpretive skills.
