Under general supervision, the Experimental Machinist performs diversified machining operations necessary to construct, alter, and repair a wide variety of experimental, prototype, or custom deliverable parts, mechanisms and laboratory or test equipment.  Works from rough sketches, preliminary drawings and/or verbal discussions with designers and engineers, and exercises independent judgment in the fabrication methods to be used. Additional responsibilities below:

  • Works on non-routine machining, fabrication, and construction tasks which mostly involve experimental, prototype or custom deliverable parts or assemblies. This requires regular interface with engineers, designers and others to understand and convey new design ideas which may have no precedent. High level of independent creativity necessary to enable visualization of desired end result together with a comparable level of judgment and practical experience to select the right materials, tools, fixtures, and techniques to fabricate and functionally modify items made
  • Plans, lays-out, and performs difficult work assignments requiring use of all types of machine and hand operations and fitting, adjusting, and checking dimensions to very close tolerances.
  • Regularly applies shop math and uses a variety of precision machinist measuring instruments.
  • May review designs or specifications for adequacy, and make corrective modifications or recommendations regarding these items.
  • May be responsible for operation, maintenance, and housekeeping of a small machine fabrication facility including use of lathes, millers, grinders, drill press, machinist tools and other standard shop equipment, keeping an adequate related supply of commonly used material and hardware.
  • May be required to prepare and maintain task assignment records and work logs.
  • Requisitions and expedites specific parts and materials for assigned work.
  • Ability to fill in as interim supervisor in times of need.

  • Ability to read, comprehend, and transmit complicated and detailed instructions to plan and perform job duties. Normally acquired through completion of a high school education.
  • Complete knowledge of machine shop practices, plus types and properties of materials. The approximate education and/or experience level by which this is attained is either 2 years of trade school or apprenticeship with 2-3 years of experience or 1 year of trade school with 1 year apprenticeship and 2-3 years of experience.
  • Thorough familiarity with and ability to interpret and use mechanical design documentation such as assembly drawings, parts lists, part drawings, test specs, fits and tolerance finishes, protective coatings, etc.
  • Experienced in Gibbscam CNC programming.
