Job Description

The Engineering Director, Global Tool Unit, will have responsibility for driving innovation and new product development, leading the global engineering team and implementing engineering process improvements for the Construction Products segment globally. As part of the Global Tool Unit leadership team this person will provide strategic input to the technical direction of the unit and its products and participate in Long Range (LRP) and Annual Planning (AP). This is a highly visible role within the Construction Products segment that will require strong collaboration and frequent interaction with Construction Division leaders world-wide. Tools, and related fasteners, account for approximately 40% of total segment revenues.

ITW Construction provides a variety of fastening systems and truss products for the commercial, residential, and remodeling/renovation segments. With products manufactured at locations around the globe serving markets in North America, Europe, Asia, New Zealand and Australia.

The Global Tool Unit (GTU) is a part of ITW’s Construction Segment. The GTU innovates, develops, and manufactures best-in-class Power Fastening Systems for the global construction market.  Our highly differentiated tools are specified to be used in a variety of applications including wood framing, wood trim, and steel to concrete installations.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Leads and implements engineering process improvements and best-in-class engineering tools to improve new product development quality and pace
  • Establish, monitor, and improve relevant key performance indicators to drive innovation & new product development performance.
  • Leads the resolution of critical customer and/or product issues through root cause analysis.
  • Builds and leads a highly effective global team and coach, mentor, and develop high-performing engineering talent across the organization
  • Effectively & efficiently allocate engineering resources and skills sets to ensure all projects activities are completed per plan and meet technical, cost, quality, and schedule requirements.
  • Cultivate and nurture innovation culture across Engineering team globally.
  • Identify, evaluate, and provide research reports on current & emerging technologies of potential interest and relevance to the organization.
  • Leads the design of patentable and/or trade-secret intellectual property for the business. Responsible for patent management around tool technology in conjunction with ITW legal.
  • Builds and leverages strong relationships and networks across the organization, with outside companies and industry influencers.
