Engineering Continuous Improvement Leader: ITW Hartness

Position Summary:

As a key member of the Engineering team, the Continuous Improvement Leader is responsible for ongoing process simplification and optimization.  This is a Senior Engineering role and will report directly to the Director of Engineering. The selected candidate will collaborate across all product lines and functions to lead the definition and implementation of process enhancements to improve engineering quality, productivity, eliminate inefficiencies, and structure products and processes in line with the ITW Hartness 80/20 philosophy.

The position will be based at our headquarters in Greenville, South Carolina.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Drive best in class product development engineering processes in partnership with the Engineering leadership staff.
  • Evaluate and improve the engineering procedures and practices required to reduce lead times, increase quality, and reduce zero-charge (warranty) costs.
  • Drive quality-focus across the Engineering organization through the development of rationalized metrics (KPI’s) and the tools by which to track them, while driving shared risk and accountability across functions.
  • Partner with Sales and Marketing teams to ensure standard designs and product offerings are aligned with market demands.
  • Partner with Operations team (Manufacturing and Assembly) to ensure Engineering process-alignment with operations.
  • Establish best-in-class procedures to ensure flawless transitions between R&D, Manufacturing, Sales, and Engineering.
  • Work with Service, Aftermarket, and Digital teams to develop ongoing processes to review and assess machine service frequency and premature part failure (advanced diagnostics and prognostics) and identify product line specific update opportunities for related revenue growth.
  • Lead and coordinate cross-functionally to define and implement business process improvements with a focus on ITW Hartness’ back-office functions in alignment with ITW Hartness’ continuous improvement toolkit.
  • Consistently reduce costs through productivity gains and toolbox initiatives.
  • Be an expert in the ITW Hartness 80/20 toolbox or continuous improvement tools and philosophies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  • A minimum of 5 years of Continuous Improvement (Quality) background and 9 total years of experience in a Product Design and Development environment, with a proven track record of sustainable results and efficiency gains.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce results within a team environment, gain alignment, and develop productive working relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong indirect influencing skills (i.e. influencing non-direct-report team members).
  • Demonstrated ability to distil complex technical and procedural problems into a problem statement, gather data to draw conclusions, and develop appropriate plans to address.
  • Strong change management, analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent time-management, prioritization, and project management skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, including presenting complex topics to senior leadership staff.
  • Willing to travel as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Formal training and experience in Engineering Quality.
  • Formal training and experience in Change Management.
  • Product Structuring and/or Configuration Management Experience.
