Job Description

Gaylord Industries, a division of Illinois Tool Works (NYSE:ITW): is a leading manufacturer of premium commercial kitchen ventilation systems.  We seek an experienced
Electrical Engineer to immediately join our Engineering/R&D team in Tualatin, OR.

The ideal candidate will conceive, design, develop, manage and maintain the electrical/electronic elements of our
Commercial Kitchen Ventilation systems and controls. Become the “Subject Matter Expert” of existing and future electronic based systems. Position will require extensive interaction with all levels of management and employees, in addition to
occasional contact with outside suppliers.  As the Engineering department supports employees throughout the company; responsiveness and cooperation with all employees is required.


Performs the design, fabrication, installation, testing, operation and/or evaluation of closed loop electronic and electro-mechanical devices or systems. May evaluate installations and recommend design modifications to eliminate malfunctions.  Performs product
development activities including CAD layout and implementation of relevant specifications and documentation requirements. May provide existing product line support in design activities and/or modification of hardware in production. Conducts engineering studies
and may assign work to technical drafting staff. At this level, assignments are moderately complex and require use of initiative and judgment. May partner with outside vendors to develop components to meet cost targets.


Performs an assortment of complex electrical engineering duties such as the design of electrical systems including hardware (circuit boards, electrical panels, etc.) and software (PLC and circuit board programming). Provides existing support to activities in
the use of electrical and electro/mechanical devices and components for commercial and industrial use. Works directly with project engineers in other disciplines to support overall product design. May provide technical/project leadership and training to lower
level professional and technical staff.


Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • 4-6 years relevant experience in controls product design
  • 3+ years’ electronic design and packaging experience
  • 3-5 years PLC & PC - based automation and operator interface programming experience.
  • 3+ years relevant experience with Modbus, BACnet or other communication protocol(s).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of mechanics and HVAC fundamentals
  • Practiced experience in 3D parametric modeling (prefer CREO)
  • Fundamental knowledge/experience with building management systems (BMS), BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, protocols.
  • Experience with technical writing, including product service documents, SOPs, work instructions, product design standards.
  • ASHRAE/ASTM exposure or membership a plus.
  • Proficient skills/experience in PLC and HMI logic and programming.
  • Display and employ competency in appropriate engineering discipline utilizing analytical tools. 
  • Working knowledge of appropriate regulatory agencies such as IEC, NFPA 70, IECC.
  • Proficient skills/experience in closed loop control systems design, Automation and PLC's.
  • Ability to design electro-mechanical interface, perform component selection, prototype fab and test.
  • Display and employ competency in appropriate engineering discipline utilizing analytical tools.
  • Exposure to HVAC, building, and/or automation control systems.

Required Skills

  • Basic knowledge of HVAC/Process Controls
  • Strong CAD proficiency (prefer AutoCAD, CREO); electrical schematic design.
  • Comfort working on multiple projects in various stages simultaneously.
  • Ability to design and specify controls systems for automated equipment including: equipment controls, variable speed drives, field devices for sensing, position, proximity, and flow.
  • Proficient in applicable computer skills; including, Microsoft Suite Applications
  • Data collection and network interfaces
  • Human Machine Interfaces (HMI’s), including programmable displays and terminals.
  • Must have ability to troubleshoot using electrical schematics, diagnostic tools, and PLC logic.
  • Ability to program in languages such as Visual BASIC, C++, Linux.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities in Electrical Design/Engineering discipline.
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Self-directed, adaptable, flexible, self-motivated, sense of urgency, good listening skills
  • Experience with Engineering Risk Assessment tools
  • Professional and thorough verbal and written communications skills.
