Permatex, AAM Engine Repair Division of Illinois Tool Works; is a leading manufacturer, distributor, and marketer of premium chemical products to the automotive maintenance and repair, home and hardware markets. Core brands include: Permatex®, Fast Orange®, Spray Nine®, and Devcon Home®. We currently seek a Director of Sales to join our team.

The Director of Sales has primary responsibility for developing and leading profitable new programs with the Company’s Distribution customers in the US. He/she will drive growth by partnering with customers to understand their needs and effectively close sales. Build and execute strategic plans with channels/customers to position the Company for success over the long-range plan domestically through growth of key product lines with top customers. He/she will focus on eliminating customer, order processing and other complexity within the channel to lead a growth focus.

The Director of Sales will be based in their home office. He/she will report to the VP/GM of the division. Reporting to this position are 1 direct report, 6 indirect reports and several manufacturer’s representative agencies.


  • Identify current and future business trends to ensure long-term business viability of Company brands globally.
  • Identify growth opportunities and work closely with Marketing Director to set strategic direction of the business by channel; formulate resources; plan, and execute for results.
  • Create and develop relations that lead to customer-back innovation, and sustainable differentiation through products, services and collaboration.
  • Work with peers to drive channel, brand and sales growth and margin improvements.
  • Build a high performing and sustainable best-in-class sales team by consistently evaluating team and sales relationships for resource planning, including geographic focus, coaching and development of team members. Partner with Human Resources to recruit as needed to grow the business.
  • Utilize data analysis to achieve Sales Targets. Understand the competition’s business model, develop product benchmarks, determine the appropriate Company product offerings for the channel and execute strategic business plan.
  • Partner and work effectively with cross functional and cross divisional corporate management and support teams.
  • Bachelor Degree in Marketing, Business, Engineering or related field required; Master’s degree or MBA preferred.
  • 7-10 years of sales management experience in the automotive aftermarket. Must include an intimate knowledge and experience in the Distribution aftermarket that focuses on professional installer end users. International experience a plus.
  • Must be able to travel up to 70% of time.
  • Must exhibit consistent behaviors: Leadership, accountability, teamwork, delivering through others, consumer/customer focus.
  • Excellent communication skills (both internally, across VP/GM & directors, and externally with customer senior management), including professional presentation skills.
  • Collaborative team player and leader. Ability to work within a matrix environment and across all levels of the organization.
