Job Description

Located in Carol Stream, IL, the Controls Engineer I will work with the engineering team to provide concept and design and supply controls engineering resources to the Industrial Decorating Solutions Group of standard and automated equipment to customers.



Responsibilities

  • Use AutoCAD Electrical to design electrical schematics, pneumatic systems and panel layouts for custom automation systems per specifications. Create and update specs from variety of sources including from scratch as required.
  • Work with other Controls Engineers in creating Trans Tech programming standards for PLCs and HMIs.
  • Create and edit operation and troubleshooting manuals for custom automation systems.
  • Assist the engineering team in conceptualizing, engineering, and completing detailed design of controls, safety, and power circuits for custom automation projects. Assist in the evaluation/integration of designs with mechanical design.
  • Apply broad knowledge of technical principles, procedures and practices to define product concept, design schematics, layouts, bills of material (hardware selection) associated software, and wiring diagrams. Ensure safety concepts are part of design.
  • Work with other Controls Engineers to program PLCs using ladder logic using structured, clear programming and program HMI using Trans Tech standards.
  • Test and troubleshoot custom automation systems utilizing internal test scripts and customer provided factory acceptance test protocols.
  • Participate in kick-off and design review meetings as required. Meet project budget, cost and time schedules and deadlines.
  • Travel and interface with customer and Trans Tech resources as required to troubleshoot controls issues at customer sites.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT:

 Computer and AutoCAD software; hand and power tools; electrical test equipment.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Frequently required to sit at computer workstations for long periods and communicate by telephone and in person. Frequently required to operate equipment, stand, walk, kneel, lift, bend, climb and carry items up to 50 lbs. while performing duties. Occasionally required to travel locally or overnight (<25%).


MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

 Continuously required to use good judgment for decision making and communicate well verbally and in writing. Required to analyze, problem solve and troubleshoot issues that arise. Required to prioritize, self-motivate, able to listen and learn and work well with others.

Job Requirements

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering preferred with 2-3 years relevant experience. Minimum Associates/technical degree with equivalent technical experience of 3-5 years and demonstrated competence.

Experience/Skills: 

  • 2-3 years design experience using AutoCAD Electrical for electrical controls, schematics, wiring diagrams; PLC programming (Allen Bradley RSLogix 5000/Studio 5000) and HMI programming (Allen Bradley FactoryTalk) for industrial machines required.
  • Mitsubishi, Panasonic or Siemens programming experience and custom system design and automation experience a plus but not required.
  • Demonstrated strong creative problem solving, self-motivation, communications (written and verbal), technical writing skills and a team player.
