Job Description

As a key member of the Controls Engineering team, the Controls Engineer  is responsible for the Programming, Commissioning, and Startup of Programmable Logic Control (PLC) based automation systems and machine centers.  The position includes planning and creating programs from scratch, for an integrated system.  A typical system includes an AB Logix PLC, Human Machine Interface (HMI), and may include servo control or FANUC robots.  The person in this role will work as part of an overall design team to specify control requirements and sequence of operations, as well as support the successful installation and support in a customer facing capacity.

The job duties will mostly be performed at ITW Hartness headquartered in Greenville, SC with travel required for startup and commissioning at customer facilities.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and create programs for packaging material handling devices (drop packers, shrink wrappers, accumulation systems, robots, conveyors, pallet dispensers, collating stations, etc.).
  • Develop and create programs to integrate multiple material handling devices to create an integrated production system.
  • Act as a key Engineering team member in cross-functional teams assigned to develop new equipment and to develop changes to existing equipment.
  • Support team with development of programming and design standards.
  • Edit and interface HMI programs with PLC and system functions.
  • Specify and maintain I/O lists used to coordinate electrical design with program design.
  • Maintain Electrical Schematics after initial system assembly is complete.
  • Test, Debug, Modify, and Validate all system functions prior to shipment.
  • Independently perform Start-up and Commission activities completed system at customer site for final customer approval.
  • Train ITW Hartness and customer technicians on the operation and program maintenance of the delivered system.
  • Provide technical support for lower level professionals and work collaboratively and cross-functionally within a team-oriented environment.
  • Apply ITW 80/20 business processes, draw conclusions using critical information from available data, and lead projects where applicable (or equivalent for external candidate).
  • Demonstrate proficiency in key software (design creation/publishing/storage).

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with equivalent experience and 3 years of related experience, or a minimum of 5 years of related experience in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in programming, installation, startup, and debug of integrated production systems.
  • Proficient in PLC programming, Rockwell Logix products
  • Experience with FANUC Robotics or other industrial robots in packaging applications
  • Familiarity with common PC languages (Visual Basic, C++, Java, HTML) a plus.
  • Prior experience working independently at customer facilities.
  • Proficient in reading, interpreting and editing electrical/pneumatic schematics and diagrams.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide engineering support in controls activities and ensure that products meet organization and industry standards.
  • Masters own area and has a basic knowledge of products supported and functional processes.
  • Sound judgement and decision-making skills with ability to deliver great results.
  • Collaborative mindset and able to interact effectively with engineering and manufacturing personnel, and actively participates and drives effective teams.
  • Analytical, detailed oriented with ability to manage time and tasks appropriately.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite skills.
  • Position requires 35% travel; must be able to obtain a passport. The majority of travel is in the U.S. but some international travel may be required.
