Job Description

Position:         Chemist - Formulation (Rust Preventatives and Lubricants)

Department:     Research & Development

Reports To:       R&D Manager

This job description should not be construed to include every function or responsibility that may arise.  Successful candidates will perform tasks as assigned or as deemed necessary in the course of day to day operations.

Summary:

The R&D Chemist will be focused on developing new rust preventative and lubricant formulas in support of New Product Development as well as improving current formulas for ease of production, cost reduction, and/or to meet regulatory demands.  The formulation chemist works closely with Operations and Quality functions to ensure smooth transition from the lab to full-scale production. 

Primary Responsibilities:

Develops new formulas and products, from concept to launch, as specified by the New Product Development process.  Key activities include competitive performance benchmarking, raw material sourcing, product stability testing, scale up, and assessment of regulatory compliance.

Works with commercial team and external stakeholders to understand application details and define new product requirements.

Continually leverages literature and tradeshows to maintain cutting-edge understanding of corrosion preventative coating and lubricant technologies.

Routinely evaluates current product formulas versus competition to identify opportunities for performance improvements in formulas, processes, regulatory compliance, and cost.

Actively supports the Change Control process for launching new products and making changes to existing products.

Actively supports and participates in the site Laboratory Safety and Chemical Hygiene Program.

Assists Manufacturing and Quality in investigating manufacturing abnormalities and conducting root cause analysis for rejected batches of product; presents findings to Quality for review/approval prior to making changes.

Manages multiple projects/tasks independently or on a team using the 80/20 philosophy.

Follows AS9100 Quality Management System as applies to R&D and as defined in the Quality System.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Core Skills/Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Chemistry from an accredited college or university and minimum of five years professional experience as a Research and Development or Formulation Chemist in a manufacturing environment, OR a combination of education / work experience one year for one year for a minimum of ten years.

Experience with formulation of corrosion preventative coatings and/or lubricants required.

Experience in aerosol manufacturing a plus.

Experience with analytical method development a plus.

Able to be a self-starter, and work independently. Acts with a sense of urgency to drive results; is goal oriented.

Possess an entrepreneurial spirit and willing to take initiative with focus on the key initiatives and opportunities for growth.

Strong understanding of customer back innovation business model.

Possess strong analytical skills to develop and interpret quantitative information in business reports and analysis.

Able to adapt effectively to changes in the work environment; able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.

Is creative and intuitive.  Able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Ability to handle multiple task, manage priorities and work independently as well as on a team.

Ability to adapt to a changing work environment in a positive manner.

Strong understanding of chemicals and related hazards.

Commitment and willingness to strive toward achieving Divisional goals and business objectives.

Possess professional writing and presentation skills. 

Proficient in the use of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Experience with SharePoint would be a plus.
