Title:     Car Care Packaging Engineer          

Reports to:      Innovation and R&D Director

Location:  Houston, Texas


The Packaging Engineer will be responsible for design, prototyping, consumer testing, customer feedback and being part of a product development team with formulation, supply chain, project management, marketing and sales team members. They will work on new product development that is supported by a clear business case.  Priority is on Consumer Car Care products not limited to glass cleaners, tire appearance products, interior car cleaning and protection products as well as packaging for other Car Care products including fuel additives and wiper blades.  They will directly report to the R&D Director and receive daily coaching from a Team Lead / R&D Manager.  Responsible for leveraging internal and external capabilities to provide innovative and efficient packaging development in support of new product innovation.  They will be part of the R&D packaging department with 3 other packaging team members.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and commercialize packaging solutions and optimizations to ensure product integrity, customer and consumer appeal and operational needs under varying shipping and retail display conditions.
  • Think out of the box and ideate with colleagues about (1) Materials Science (2) Novel delivery systems and devices not limited to triggers, aerosols, and breakthrough attractive packaging and package use experience and ergonomics.
  • Develop and prototype designs with marketing, vendors, 3rd party contract manufacturers and customers throughout exploration and feasibility stages.
  • Create comprehensive test plans and perform package ship testing to include distribution simulations, material performance, bench-marking, and package/product compatibility.
  • Maintain knowledge and evaluate new packaging developments, materials, trends and packaging systems for possible product applications.
  • Test, analyze, and selects materials for packaging based on innovation, durability, compatibility and cost effectiveness
  • Maintains packaging Bills of Material (BOMs) and pallet patterns to support manufacturing protocols.  Maintains Specifications as developed and coordinates among proprietary and contract plants to ensure that specifications are met.
  • Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis to support continuous improvement programs through the innovation, redesign and manufacturing process of packaging components.
  • Supports efforts for quality monitoring and assurance processes with packaging suppliers across the network.  Provide technical expertise, creativity and foresight to Quality Assurance in solving packaging related quality issues.
  • Coordinates supplier corrective actions across the network and leverage the Procurement group as necessary to manage supplier quality issues.
  • Assists in business case input for development of capital requirements needed by packaging changes and provides input to packaging project plans.
  • Assists coordination efforts with Marketing to understand requirements and creates designs to meet those requirements while preserving functionality and durability of packaging materials
  • Conducts root cause analysis and troubleshooting exercises as needed and resolves issues through internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage assigned workload through effective time management, planning, and coordination of projects to meet fast paced schedules and deadlines.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of basic supplier manufacturing processes including plastic molding, flexible materials, secondary cartons and corrugate.


  • BS in engineering required.
  • Required 2-9 years’ experience preferably in Consumer Packaged Goods but it is ok to have primary packaging development role in a consumer product, durable goods, food or beverage industry.
  • Highly organized, self-=starter able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, adapt well to changing schedules and prioritize multiple projects.  We innovate we don’t “support”.
  • Demonstrated results in the selection and application of sound engineering practices and principles to the design and development of high-volume consumer products packaging.
  • Broad understanding of the fundamentals of consumer packaging development with a working knowledge of materials, equipment, and processes required in the production of consumer packaging, particularly liquid, aerosols and flexible packages.
  • Demonstrated project management skills for packaging changes and packaging introductions.
  • Solid organization, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability and desire to contribute within a multi-functional team environment
  • Creative, highly motivated self-driven individual with the demonstrated ability to independently complete complex engineering tasks as well as with various levels of the organization.
  • Experience working with vendors, business partners and manufacturing operations.
  • Microsoft Office PowerPoint, Excel and Project experience a plus.
  • Experienced in risk management and quality assurance operations.
  • Travel approximately 5-30%
