Job Description

The Business Analyst is part of the Corporate IT Business Solutions team and is responsible for helping the corporate functions leverage technology to solve business problems.

The Business Analyst will serve as the direct interface with users and management of ITW’s corporate functions to align IT strategies and solutions with that of the specific functions. In addition to acting as the escalation point for client technology issues of supported solutions, this individual will be responsible for application roadmaps, solution shaping. 3rd party solution assessments, requirements collection, test plan development, project planning/management and implementation. The Business Analyst reports to the Director of Corporate Business Solutions.

The ideal candidate will thrive in an informal, decentralized culture where decisions are largely consensus-based, and strong execution is expected and valued.

Primary Responsibilities:

Business Relationship/Client Management

  • Serve as the main point of contact for specific corporate functions for IT applications and solutions
  • Understand business acumen and strategies of specific functions and align with appropriate technology solutions
  • Serves as liaison between the business and more technical teams within corporate IT
  • Understand client deadlines and help set priorities within corporate IT existing project workload
  • Work with function management and application owners to prepare roadmaps for key business solutions
  • Assist functional management with business case development

Analysis and Solution Shaping

  • Elicit requirements using interviews, document analysis, requirements workshops, surveys, site visits, business process descriptions, use cases, scenarios, business analysis, task and workflow analysis
  • Drive and challenge business partners on their assumptions of how they will successfully execute their plans
  • Collaborate with developers and subject matter experts to establish the technical vision and analyze tradeoffs between usability and performance needs

Technical Recommendation and Testing

  • Understands technical design specifications and assesses potential solutions (in-house, 3rd party, cloud, etc.)
  • Defines test conditions and in unison with the application owners, develop comprehensive test plans
  • Conducts testing according to plan while identifying and documenting system deficiencies

Project Implementation/Project Management

  • Interfaces with client and various technology groups to document overall project tasks, responsibilities and timelines
  • Facilitates internal and external meetings with clearly stated objectives and agendas.
  • Adheres to project standards defined by project management.
  • Effectively employs ITW’s methodologies and ensure project and application documentation is current and accurate

  • Outstanding verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to interact and build trust at all levels
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment – can take lead position when necessary
  • Highly self-motivated with limited direction
  • Strong business acumen of corporate functions (HR, Finance, Legal, Tax, Audit, Procurement, etc.)
  • Highly organized and respectful of the need to plan amidst multiple priorities
  • Proven record of customer service and the ability to balance conflicting customer priorities
  • Skilled in working with and directing software providers, consultants


Experience/Skills Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Business or related field.
  • Masters/MBA degree is a plus
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in Information Systems with minimum of 7 years as a Business Analyst
  • Experienced in all aspects of the systems development life cycle
  • Experienced within regulatory requirements (SOX, HIPAA, Privacy acts, etc.).
  • Knowledge of application design, development, testing as well as user interface best practices
  • Knowledge of information security principles, including risk assessment and management
  • Knowledge of network infrastructure including routers, switches, firewalls and associated network protocols and concepts
