Hobart Brothers LLC, an Illinois Tool Works Company within the Welding Group, is a recognized leader in the manufacturing and distribution of welding consumables worldwide. 

Basic Description:

The analytical chemist is responsible for the day-to-day operation of all chemical analysis instruments and mechanical testing instruments that support Hobart Brothers manufacturing and product development.  The candidate will supervise 2-3 laboratory technicians who perform routine testing.

The analytical chemist works to improve the quality (accuracy and precision) of the data produced in the lab, while maintaining or reducing the turnaround time to complete analysis.

This person will grow to become the resident expert in all of the testing methods used to ensure product quality, and monitor filler metal products’ performance.  They will seek out, recommend, and implement new testing methods which service to improve product quality or speed up the product development process.

The analytical chemist will also partner with the rest of the quality group to resolve customer issues and investigate any product quality concerns.  The chemist will eventually represent the lab during customer and third-party agency audits.

Essential Functions:

  • Understand and become proficient in the operation of all Hobart Brothers chemical analysis instrumentation, e.g. Optical Emission Spectrometer, combustion analysis instruments (Moisture, Carbon, Sulfur, Oxygen, and Nitrogen), X-ray Fluoresence Spetrometry (EDS/handheld PMI), Moisture analysis methods.
  • Knowledgeable about mechanical testing (Tensile test methods, Charpy V-Notch Impact testing, Macro- and Micro-hardness testing, AWS weld guided bend test methods.
  • Perform routine testing when needed (i.e. vacations).
  • Perform preventative maintenance, and basic trouble-shooting as necessary to maintain 99% up-time goal for critical instruments.
  • Order supplies and maintain an inventory of critical materials and spare parts.
  • Supervise 2-3 current laboratory technicians.  Train production QC technicians who perform routine testing, and any new-hires as required.
  • Improve existing test methods, validate chances and update test procedures.  Ensure company procedures are current with industry standards.  Research new analytical technology and explore benefits to Hobart Brothers.
  • Become familiar with all common Non-Destructive Testing methods, and knowledgeable in those used at Hobart Brothers (Radiographic inspection)
  • Develop expertise in welding industry codes and relevant product specifications.
  • Be familiar with annual testing requirements, and the processes connected to Hobart certified tested orders.
  • Assist the quality department during audits by customers and outside agencies.
  • Participate in teams that investigate and resolve warranty returns, customer concerns, and quality issues.

Job Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science degree is required; preference for chemistry or chemical engineering disciplines.  Will also consider candidates with a degree in applied physics and materials/metallurgical engineering.

  • Prior experience in a laboratory or manufacturing quality control position would be a plus.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, be able to analyze data, break down complex problems, and propose data-driven solutions.

  • Demonstrated ability to actively participate in cross-functional teams to understand issues and collaborate to propose effective solutions.

  • Possess time management skills and be a self-starter.

  • Capable of working with minimal supervision and drive objectives to completion.

  • Basic computing skills; e.g. familiarity with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office suite.
