Hi-Cone, a division of ITW, is a leading supplier of plastic-based multi-packaging systems for global beer, soft drink and general products industries.  The main responsibility of this position will be to exercise all elements of supervision, directly or on a delegated basis i.e., through Group Leader.  Will provide job assignments, assist with employee training as needed, and ensure a safe work environment for all employees.  Will also administer progressive discipline, if needed per general guidelines, ensure accurate and complete production records such as overtime and attendance, and communicates directly with all departments to provide department continuity of instruction and information.  The Shift Supervisor is responsible for the safety and morale of work force on the shift.

Shift Supervisor will achieve and maintain an acceptable level of production and quality and ensure compliance with basic product specifications and quality requirements with the freedom to adjust within specifications.  Must be prepared to answer questions relevant to quality concerns that may arise in such areas as raw materials, extrusion, punch press, labeling, winding, or packaging.

Work diligently with Management on continuous operations improvements such as the reduction of scrap, quality improvements, and cost associated with production materials and secondary manufacturing processes.   Will work with other department managers and supervisors to review, recommend, resolve problems or seek improvements concerning personnel, quality, output, cost, throughput, and equipment to fulfill responsibility for efficient utilization and control of resources.  Completes special assignments including material, product, equipment and methods trials including new Product Development projects.

Ensures compliance with production schedules.  Will also be responsible for correct schedule implementation of material required with including type, color, blending technique and virgin/regrind ratios within specifications and prescribed procedures.

Nature and scope:

  • Maintains and updates safety policies and procedures and performs upkeep on required OSHA records and audits.
  • Actively leads the safety culture on related shift and delivers monthly safety training.
  • Works with the quality manager to analyze root causes of quality issues and correct issues moving forward.  Includes training of operators on new practices to improve quality.
  • Actively schedules production activity in the plant and assigns proper operators to those operations to build inventory at the market rate of demand.
  • Clearly communicates production deadlines with shipping staff and operators so that made to order products are delivered on time to the end customer.
  • Utilizes the ITW toolbox (80/20, in-lining, UsA, MRD) to promote and assist with continuous improvement projects, ultimately developing into a toolbox leader.
  • Familiar with basic applicator operation as it relates to carrier applicator efficiency.
  • Work with other Hi-Cone plants as needed for necessary consistency and optimization of manufacturing practices.
  • Ensure new hires are trained in all aspects of their job, track their performance, and provide progress feedback to the employee and Operations manager regarding their progress as outlined in the New Hire Probationary Policy.
  • Perform annual employee performance reviews including written documentation and employee counseling sessions.
  • Promptly and properly use progressive discipline guidelines to correct performance issues which could include failure of an operator to obtain qualification.
  • Interview new hire applicants and recommend qualified applicants for hire.
  • Answer all shift personnel questions regarding wage administration, routine policies, and fringe benefits and direct employee to appropriate source for questions outside of routine concerns.


  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in business, operations, engineering, or related degree a plus
  • Minimum 2-5 years of supervisory experience
  • Must have hands-on process manufacturing experience (ideally in plastics, flexible packaging, and printing), production and inventory control
  • Safety policy and OSHA compliance experience a plus
  • Must be able to coach, counsel, and mentor employees
  • Will be required to work flexible shift on occasion to cover other supervisors.
  • Must have good verbal and written communications skill and lead by example.
  • Must be competent with use of production computers system and be able to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for production efficiency analysis and communication.
  • Must be familiar with operation of forklift and other miscellaneous tools such as precision gauges, micrometers.
  • Must learn all aspects of Hi-Cone Process Technology and be able to trouble shoot and diagnose problems.
