Job Description

Brooks Instrument is an industry leader in flow measurement and flow control products for critical applications, and a division of ITW (A Fortune 150 Company) is seeking candidates for a Materials Manager.   This highly visible position will be based out of our headquarters facility in Hatfield, PA (Suburban Philadelphia).  In addition to our Hatfield, PA facility, Brooks maintains manufacturing locations in, Hungary, France and Japan. The Company maintains sales offices throughout the world and its products are used in laboratory and process applications in end markets such as: life sciences, chemicals, semiconductor, analytical instruments, nuclear, and solar cells.

Basic Function

Responsible for leading the planning, purchasing and inventory management activities.  These activities involve working with other departments, as well as suppliers, to manage and procure material and services to meet or exceed business targets.  Responsible for driving improvement in on time delivery (OTD) and inventory levels (MOH), as well as the monthly development and monitoring of operational division revenue targets. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  •  Improve department and employee performance by monitoring business metrics (including OTD and months-on-hand inventory levels). Utilize continuous improvement tools to impact key metrics.  
  • Develop and support a cohesive team of buyers and planners by providing ongoing feedback, tracking performance, and administering performance management process in accordance with company policy.
  • Promote and use a structured problem-solving approach to Identify and address root causes of problems with business processes.  Provide coaching on problem solving to Materials team members as needed. 
  • Drive continuous improvement and 80/20 tool box initiatives by identifying project opportunities, leading projects, and providing buyers and planners with coaching on project leadership. 
  • Actively participate in the Sales, Inventory and Operations Planning (SIOP) process.  Prepare and communicate the output of the SIOP process to other departments, management and suppliers as required.
  • Represent the Materials team by actively participating in projects related to ERP improvements, upgrades, and migrations. 
  • Ensure that published product lead times are accurate.  Work closely with Product Management to identify and implement changes to product lead times.
  • Interact with Business Units, department members, other departments, suppliers and customers as necessary to provide direction and resolve problems.
  • Prepare presentations and communicate all relevant issues and updates to Operations and all levels of management.
  • Work with the Strategic Procurement function to identify outsourcing/resourcing opportunities as well as the phase in/phase out inventory planning as a result of the Strategic Procurement initiatives.
  • Ensure that the company’s established procedures and policies are followed within the department.
  • Follow all safety procedures.
  • Regular attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience 

  • Bachelors degree in business administration or related field required.
  • Experience with buying and planning in a production environment, as well as experience in leadership roles.
  • A track record of improving key business metrics. 
  • Ability to coach and mentor employees as well as develop a team.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
  • Proficient with the use of computers, ERP systems, and Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. 
  • Experience with MAPICS (Infor) is desirable.
  • Highly adaptable to new ideas, people and procedures in a dynamic business environment. 
  • A high level of interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written with people at all levels of the organization and with external contacts.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Advanced studies or degree in business administration (MBA) and certification in Materials Management or Supply Chain is desirable.
