Chief Controls & Electrical Engineer: ITW Hartness

Position Summary:

As a key member of the Engineering organization, the Chief Controls & Electrical Engineer is responsible for providing technical guidance and oversight to the Controls & Electrical Engineering teams and reports directly to the Director of Engineering.  The selected candidate will be an Electrical Engineering domain expert and will collaborate across ITW Hartness, other ITW businesses, and industry affiliations to ensure industry-leading technologies are implemented across all product lines to define world-class equipment that meets our core markets’ needs.

The position will be based at the ITW Hartness headquarters in Greenville, South Carolina.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Review and formally approve major new product designs or design changes through the application of fundamental Electrical Engineering principles, including hand-calculations and physics-based verifications.
  • Ensure the consistent application of physics-based Electrical Engineering principals across all product-lines.
  • Teach, Mentor, and Coach members of the Controls & Electrical Engineering team as well as the greater ITW Hartness community.
  • Evaluate and improve the engineering procedures and practices required to ensure robust, high-Quality, and long-life designs compliant with international and domestic codes and standards.
  • Drive best in class product development engineering processes in partnership with the Engineering leadership staff.
  • Drive harmonization of electrical equipment selection across product lines.
  • Drive the resolution of top technical issues with a demonstrated sense of urgency in collaboration with Product Line Experts.
  • Partner with Sales and Marketing teams to ensure designs and product offerings are aligned with current and evolving industrial trends and customer desires.
  • Partner with Operations team to ensure Engineering designs are optimized to facilitate efficient flow through Manufacturing and Assembly, as well as ease of maintenance service and future upgrades.
  • Partner with internal Product Line Experts to establish and ensure adherence to best-in-class design practices.
  • Partner with Continuous Improvement leader to establish and ensure adherence to Design Record-keeping practices.
  • Partner with Sourcing organization and leverage domain expertise to optimize the supply chain of key Electrical components.
  • Partner with Engineering Leadership staff to identify and drive design improvements in Quality, Cost, and enhanced customer experience.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  • Minimum 25 years of applied experience in Controls & Electrical Engineering field.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in Product Design & Development.
  • Minimum 10 years of applied experience with Packaging equipment.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience reviewing and approving Electrical System designs.
  • Intimate familiarity with Electrical System schematics, electrical panel designs, Electrical components (motors, drives, servos, switches, sensors, etc.) utilized in automated packaging systems, including both Rockwell and Siemens platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate Electrical System designs with Control System and Mechanical System architecture to develop high-quality integrated solutions.
  • Expert-level understanding of the common domestic and international design regulatory standards, including UL, CE, CUL, NEC, ISO, etc. as they apply to the packaging industry.
  • Expert-level understanding of machine safety systems, including the components and circuit design to meet industry and regulatory requirements. 
  • Expert-level understanding of the major safety regulatory standards, including NFPA, RIA, OSHA, etc. as they apply to the packaging industry.
  • PLC and HMI programming experience within Rockwell and Siemens platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce results within a team environment, gain alignment, and develop productive working relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong indirect influencing skills (i.e. influencing non-direct-report team members).
  • Demonstrated ability to distill complex technical and procedural problems into a problem statement, gather data to draw conclusions, and develop appropriate plans to address.
  • Strong change management, analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent time-management, prioritization, and project management skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, including presenting complex topics to senior leadership staff.
  • Willing to travel as necessary.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree in Engineering (Master’s or PhD).
  • South Carolina Professional Engineering License.
  • Hands-on experience with manufacturing and assembly of Controls & Electrical equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with field service of Controls & Electrical equipment.
  • Experience in food and beverage packaging industry.
  • Experience with FANUC robotic systems.
  • Intimate familiarity with Hartness product lines.
