Business Unit Manager

The Opportunity
This role is based within Instron’s Static division and encompasses the division’s electromechanical and static hydraulic equipment for high force applications (machines delivering forces 100kN or greater).  Target customers are metals and composites manufacturers in a variety of industries.
This position provides strategic leadership for all global High Force Applications (HFA), activities and is focused on achieving annual objectives for revenue and profit as well as the key strategic deliverables.  These include driving the HFA business towards growth by completing the necessary product line simplification activities and developing a roadmap for future products by solving pain points of HFA’s “80” metals and composite customers.  As a senior department manager, this position is responsible for the continued development of a strong engineering and marketing team that thrives in a dynamic, global and fast-paced environment.


Successful candidates should possess a Bachelor’s Degree in a related technical field as well as at least ten years of engineering, product management or sales experience gained within a capital equipment manufacturer.  Advanced technical or business-related degree (MBA) preferred.   Additional requirements include:

  • Ability to facilitate and drive change within the department and organization.
  • Develop and execute a strategic vision for the HFA Business Unit.
  • Demonstrated 80/20 experience with a proven track record of results.
  • Strong coach with the ability to hire, develop and retain a diverse pipeline of great talent.Direct experience of managing and developing a team of highly capable employees.
  • A global mindset.Must be culturally aware and be able to build constructive and effective relationships across the organization.
  • A positive attitude focused on understanding, anticipating and responding to the needs of our customers, both internal and external to the department and organization.
  • Must have in-depth understanding of capital equipment sales, preferably within material testing. Experience should include all aspects of distribution including direct sales and distribution over multiple industries.
